Lisbon Tourist Map
Lisbon is built across seven hills and a handful of very walkable districts. Here is how they fit together.
Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and the Belém guided walk sit together on the riverfront west of the centre. São Jorge Castle, the Alfama guided walk and the Fado evening cluster around the old town to the east. Pena Palace and Sintra are a separate day trip, about 40 minutes by train from Rossio station.
Baixa & Chiado
The flat, grid-planned downtown between the two hills - shopping streets, Commerce Square on the river, and the Santa Justa Lift up to the ruins of Carmo Convent.

Alfama & Graça
The oldest part of the city, climbing the hill east of Baixa to São Jorge Castle. Narrow lanes, Fado houses and the best miradouros are all here.
Belém
West along the river, where Portugal's Age of Discovery is written into the monuments - Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, and the custard tart bakery that started it all.

Bairro Alto
Quiet by day, Lisbon's densest concentration of bars and small restaurants by night. Sits on the hill above Chiado.
Sintra
A hillside town of palaces about 40 minutes from central Lisbon by train. Pena Palace is included on the 2 and 3-day Journey Pass - give it the best part of a day.
