Pena is what happens when a nineteenth-century king with German taste and a Portuguese hilltop is given a ruined monastery to play with. Ferdinand II kept the cloister, then wrapped it in battlements, minarets, tiled domes and a drawbridge that has never had to work.
Inside, the royal apartments are left much as the family walked out of them in 1910. Outside, the park runs for 200 hectares of tree ferns, camellias and paths that most visitors never take.
