São Jorge Castle
The Moorish citadel on Lisbon's highest hill, with the best view in the city over Alfama, the Baixa grid and the Tagus. Entry is included with your pass.

There has been a fortress on this hill since the Romans, but the walls you walk today are Moorish, taken by Afonso Henriques in 1147 and turned into a royal palace. The 1755 earthquake finished off most of the palace; what survived is the shell, the towers and the terrace.
Come for the walls and stay for the view: the whole city falls away below you, from the tiled roofs of Alfama to the river. Peacocks patrol the grounds. The camera obscura in the Tower of Ulysses gives a live periscope view over the rooftops.
Lisbon Journey Pass tips
- The walk up from Baixa is steep and cobbled - take tram 28E or bus 737 if you would rather save your legs.
- Sunset from the western terrace is the picture everyone comes for; arrive an hour before.
- The camera obscura runs on the hour in clear weather and is included with entry.
- Your Alfama guided walk finishes nearby, so the two work well on the same day.
Getting to São Jorge Castle
- São Jorge Castle R. de Santa Cruz do Castelo, 1100-129 Lisboa
- Tram 28E to Miradouro de Santa Luzia, then ten minutes uphill
- Bus 737 from Praça da Figueira climbs to the castle gate
- Metro Baixa-Chiado or Martim Moniz, then the Castelo lift and a walk
