A narrow tiled street in Alfama with a passing tram

Alfama Guided Walk

Two and a half hours through the oldest quarter in Lisbon with a licensed One Journey guide - the lanes, the viewpoints, and how people actually live here.

INCLUDED with the Lisbon Journey Pass 2.5h small group · normally €40

Alfama survived the 1755 earthquake because it is built on rock, which is why it is the one part of Lisbon that still has a Moorish street plan. Nothing runs straight. Washing hangs between windows. It is a neighbourhood before it is a sight.

Your guide takes the back lanes rather than the tram route, stops at the viewpoints when they are quiet, and explains what you are hearing when the Fado starts. Exteriors only - this is a walking and looking tour.

Lisbon Journey Pass tips

  • Reserve your time in the app, ideally the day before.
  • The route is steep and cobbled in places. Shoes with grip, not smooth soles.
  • The 16:30 departure ends near the Fado houses, which works if you have a Fado evening booked.
  • São Jorge Castle is a short climb from the end point.
