The carved stone facade of Jerónimos Monastery in Belém

Jerónimos Monastery

The great Manueline monastery of Belém, built on the riches of the spice route and holding the tomb of Vasco da Gama. Your pass carries a timed-entry ticket, so you walk in at your slot.

INCLUDED with the Lisbon Journey Pass Timed entry · normally €18

Begun in 1501 and five centuries in the making, Jerónimos is the high point of Manueline architecture - Portuguese late Gothic carved with ropes, anchors, sea monsters and knots, the whole vocabulary of a country that had just found its way to India.

The two-storey cloister is the reason to come. Every arch is different, every column worked like ivory, and the light moves around it all morning. The church of Santa Maria next door holds the tombs of Vasco da Gama and the poet Luís de Camões.
